Midwest rebel state Iowa marks the one-year anniversary of marriage equality in the state on Saturday. And state gay rights groups are looking to the future, hoping to mark many more anniversaries.
“We are continuing to work, and we have set a goal of celebrating our five-year anniversary in 2014,” said Carolyn Jenison, executive director of
One Iowa, after a press conference Tuesday, according to the
Iowa Independent. “At that point, we’ll feel more like we can relax a little bit.”
In the past year, there have been several attempts to overturn the Iowa Supreme Court’s ruling that legalized same-sex marriage. But, slowly, attitudes toward same-sex marriage appear to have improved.
Democratic Gov. Chet Culver is one example of the changing attitudes. Prior to the state Supreme Court’s ruling, he said he would convene a special session if necessary “to protect marriage between a man and a woman.” But after the decision, he voiced his reticence to changing the state constitution.
