CNN's Gay In America

Postby Sozo » June 24th, 2010, 6:54 pm

CNN is the only network that I'm familiar with that has really taken on the battle and struggle of gay people in America. Tonight, they are showing a documentary called "Gary and Tony Have A Baby" that will highlight the struggles of gay people as they attempt to have children.

There are also doing a serious on gays in the church, here is one of the clips from that show, that I found interesting.

First of all, nobody's going to win a lawsuit regarding what they've given to the church. The church makes no promises to adhere to a particular individual's interpretation of Scripture. I'm amazed that she would do such a thing, and even she admits that it wasn't of God.

I'm so wowed at this church for having a presumably straight husband/wife pastoral team and yet standing up for civil rights, even to the loss of half their congregation. It's really encouraging.

It's really good to know that CNN is looking more into homosexuality. They've always been a network that looked at social issues a little better than the others, who are more focused on political issues rather than social. And, of course, you've gotta love Soledad O'Brien.

I look forward to seeing more from them. Keep me posted, cuz you know I'm not a regular watcher of CNN, so I'll likely have no idea when other relevant shows are coming on.

And BTW, I did watch the Gary and Tony special. Very moving, but also very frustrating. I didn't know it cost that much to go the surrogacy route. I don't know why their state required them to have an egg donated from a third party, implanted into a second party surrogate, and then carried to term. Why didn't they just use in vitro fertilization and let the person with the egg be the surrogate if she was inclined? That would leave a third player out of the mix and make it cheaper. Although, it's probably for their protection, seeing as if it was the surrogate's egg, she might have even more of a legal claim on the child should she change her mind and decide to keep it; whereas, just because she carried it to term as a surrogate, it wasn't her baby biologically, so she really had no claim. So, it's probably safer going that route, but still, very expensive!

I'd better start saving up because I do plan on having a family one of these ol' days.

First Pastor, since surrogates get paid so much, I can be your surrogate!

Seriously, I am also blessed to see that CNN is covering this gay people, especially positive changes in the church and gay relationship. The Gary and Tony special was beautiful. Me and Xa watched and cried our way through. I also wanted to cry my way through this clip on this woman suing her church. I believe it was disgraceful. First, the woman from the beginning, this woman stated that suing was not Christian and that she was in the flesh. Then when she was asked to think about why she did it, and to critically think about gay rights and what the Bible really says about gays and she flat out denied the willingness to even think critically about the subject. It was raw, backwards tradition. This situation is embarrassing to Christians and to black people!

PS- Fox News has also taken a serious interest in gay people as well! Recently Bill "Papa Bear" O'Reilly compared gay rights to terrorism! That's just to the tip of the Fox News iceberg. Think about all the things Fox New's Sean Hannity and Mike Huckabee have said about gay people also.

CNN is by far the best network there is. Not only do they stay closer to the middle than any other outlet, I think they truly understand the definition of "Fair and Balanced" It shows in their reporting and their documentaries like this. Gary and Tony was amazing and I too cried my way through it. They have one coming up about Black in America "churched" which is going to be awesome too.

Among MANY issues I have with this, there is one I want to focus on. First of all, we as Christians don't "pay" the church our tithes. We give just a portion of what God has blessed us with as a means of obedience, dependence, and faith in Christ. It reminds us of who should be first in our lives. It is a command given to us from the LORD. Regardless of what any church does with the money, that is on their hands. But we are to give to where we are being fed. She should have prayerfully left the church. She wants to talk about being against the LORD, since when does "two wrongs" (going with her belief that homosexuality is wrong), make a right? How can she not be shamed of her actions? Because most people still believe that if they sin against homosexuals or homosexuality, they get a pass. Because we still put a hierarchy on sin. Ridiculous.

I am definitely looking forward to the next installment! As for the comment by Free, you are exactly right! This woman talked about the churches lack of respect for the member's opinions...but who's opinion is first, God or man! This clip is an example of what the Bible talks about in having dead religion.

Again, I we can not again miss or downplay the courage of these pastors. On the positive side, it showed great growth in our religious community. The fact that a straight couple would be willing to loose their whole congregation to support God's love towards gays and all people is beautiful beyond description.

It is very encouraging, you're right, and it shows too that we are in fact making progress.
